Lesson 08: Computer Drives and Library (Where is your data stored?)

When you enter a house, there are different rooms like the Kitchen, Bedroom, or Store Room. Similarly, inside a computer, there are specific "rooms" to store your items, which we call Drives and Folders.

1. This PC (My Computer): The Front Door

On your Desktop, you will see a computer-shaped icon labeled This PC or My Computer. Double-clicking this opens the door to your computer’s entire memory storage.

2. Hard Disk and "Drives" (C, D, E)

The computer's memory is divided into large sections called Drives:

Local Disk (C:): This is the most critical drive. It contains all the software and the "Windows" operating system.
Pro Tip: Avoid saving your personal office work in the C: drive. If the computer needs to be formatted, this drive is usually wiped clean.
Local Disk (D: or E:): This is your "Almirah" (Cabinet). All important office work, files, and folders should always be saved here for safety.

Note: If your computer has only a C: drive, you will have to use it. However, remember that the Desktop, Documents, and Downloads folders are all part of the C: drive.

3. Windows Library (Ready-made Folders)

Windows provides pre-made folders so your work stays organized:

  • Documents: Use this for written files like Word or Excel documents.
  • Pictures: All your photos and images are typically saved here.
  • Downloads: Anything you download from the internet lands in this folder first.

4. File Explorer: Finding Your Way

The window that opens when you browse folders is called File Explorer.

Address Bar: This shows the current location or "path" (which drive or folder you are currently in).
Back Button (←): To return to the previous folder.
Search Box: If you can't find a file, type its name here to search.

Essential Glossary

  • Drive: A major section of computer memory (e.g., C:, D:).
  • Path: The full address of a file (Example: D Drive > Office Work > Bill.pdf).
  • Sidebar: The left panel in Explorer containing quick shortcuts.

Today's Practice

1. Double-click This PC on your Desktop.
2. Identify how many Drives your computer has (C, D, or E).
3. Click the Downloads folder in the left panel to see what is stored there.
4. Open the Documents folder and right-click on an empty space to see the available options.
Tip: "Always try to save your work in the (D:) or (E:) drive. This ensures that even if your Windows crashes, your office data remains safe!"
