What Will You Learn?
When you turn on your computer and Windows loads, the very first screen you see is called the Desktop. Think of it as your office desk where you keep all your essential tools and files.
1. Desktop and Icons: Your Essentials
The small images you see on the screen are called Icons.
- This PC / My Computer: This contains all the files, folders, and memory storage of your computer.
- Recycle Bin: This is the computer's "Dustbin." Any file you delete goes here first.
- Shortcuts: Icons with a small arrow in the corner are not the actual files, but pathways (shortcuts) to open programs quickly.
2. Taskbar: The Strip at the Bottom
The Taskbar is the long strip at the bottom of the screen. Its main components are:
Start Button (⊞): The first button on the left. Click here to see a list of all your installed software.
Search Bar: Here, you can type the name of any software (like "Paint") to find it instantly.
Pinned Apps: You can "Pin" apps you use frequently here so they open with a single click.
Active Apps: Any software that is currently open will show a small highlight at the bottom of the taskbar.
3. System Tray: The Right Corner
The right side of the Taskbar provides essential information:
- Clock & Date: To keep track of time and the calendar.
- Wi-Fi / Internet: To check your connection status.
- Battery & Volume: To monitor laptop charge and control sound levels.
4. How to instantly return to the Desktop?
If you have many programs open and want to see your Desktop quickly:
Trick 1: Move your mouse to the very bottom-right corner of the Taskbar and click.
