By now, you have understood the important buttons on the keyboard. Now, we will learn how to use these buttons together (combinations) to perform tasks at lightning speed.
1. The "Big 3" Shortcuts (Office Essentials)
In an office environment, 90% of the work involves these three shortcuts:
Ctrl + C (Copy): To copy any text or file.
Ctrl + V (Paste): To place the copied item in a new location.
Ctrl + S (Save): To secure your work. Make it a habit to press this every 5 minutes!
2. Alt + Tab: Jumping between Tasks
In the office, you will often need to use Excel and Google Chrome simultaneously. Switch between them without using a mouse:
- Hold the
Altbutton and then pressTab. - You will see all your open windows on the screen.
- Keep pressing Tab until the desired window is selected, then release
Alt.
3. Apple (Mac) Keyboard: Don't Be Intimidated!
Sometimes you might encounter "Apple" computers (Mac) in high-end offices. The main difference is the Command (Cmd) ⌘ key, which replaces Ctrl.
Copy: Cmd + C | Paste: Cmd + V | Save: Cmd + S
The button on Apple keyboards is labeled 'Command' or '⌘'. Everything else works just like Windows!
4. Other "Smart" Shortcuts
Ctrl + Z (Undo): Deleted something by mistake? Press
