Lesson 11: Basic File Operations (Copy, Move, Delete, Rename)
What Will You Learn?
In the previous lesson, you learned how to identify files. Now, we will learn how to manage them—meaning moving them from one place to another, changing names, or removing unwanted files.
1. Renaming a File (Rename)
Method 1 (Mouse): Right-click the file and select Rename (or the pencil icon). Type the new name and press
Enter.Method 2 (Shortcut): Click the file once and press
F2 on your keyboard to rename it instantly.2. Copy vs Cut (Duplicate vs Transfer)
- Copy (
Ctrl + C): This keeps the file in its original location and creates a duplicate in the new location. - Cut (
Ctrl + X): This removes the file from the original location and moves it to the new one. - Paste (
Ctrl + V): After Copying or Cutting, you must use Paste at the destination for the file to appear.
3. Deleting and Restoring Files
If you delete a file by mistake, you can get it back using the Recycle Bin on your Desktop:
Delete: Select the file and press the
Delete key. It moves to the Recycle Bin.Permanent Delete: Pressing

Essential Glossary
- Clipboard: The computer's temporary memory where copied items are stored until pasted.
