Lesson 13: Notepad (First Practice of Typing and Saving Files)

Notepad is the simplest "Writing Pad" on a computer. In an office, it is often used for quick note-taking or creating "To-Do Lists" for daily tasks.

1. How to Open Notepad?

1. Press the Windows Key (🪟).
2. Type Notepad using the keyboard.
3. Press Enter. A blank white screen will appear.

2. Understanding the Cursor

You will see a small vertical line blinking on the screen. This is called the Cursor.

  • Typing begins wherever this cursor is positioned.
  • When you press Space, it moves forward.
  • When you press Enter, it moves to the next line.

3. Typing Exercise (Type these exactly)

Set your fingers on the keyboard and type the following lines:

1. My name is [-----------]. (Keep the first letter capital using the Shift key).
2. Today, I am creating my first file on the computer.
3. Learning computers is very easy! (Use Shift + 1 for the "!" mark).

4. Saving a File (The Master Step)

The biggest mistake in an office is working without saving. This step is the most important:

1. Press Ctrl + S on the keyboard.
2. A window will open. Select D: Drive from the left panel (or your preferred location).
3. File Name: Type My_First_Note in the box.
4. Click on Save.

Now your file is securely stored in the computer's memory forever.

Office Shortcut Table (Notepad Edition)

Shortcut Action When to Use?
Ctrl + N New File When you want to start a new task after finishing the old one.
Ctrl + S Save Press this every 2 minutes so your work isn't lost.
Ctrl + Z Undo To immediately remove a typing mistake.
Alt + F4 Close To exit or close Notepad.

Essential Glossary (Words to Remember)

  • Blinking Cursor: The vertical line that shows where you are typing.
  • Document: Any written file is called a document in computer terms.
  • Text: The alphabets or numbers you have typed.

Daily Practice

1. Open Notepad and write the names of 5 family members.
2. Press Enter after each name to move to a new line.
3. Save this file in your folder with the name "Family_Names".
4. Close Notepad, then go back to the folder and double-click the file to check if the names are there.
Tip: "If your cursor moves somewhere else while typing, simply click with the mouse where you want to type. The cursor will move there!"
