How to Control the Mouse and Cursor : Lesson 02 — ComputerSeekhoAurJobPao

Lesson 02: How to Control the Mouse and Cursor?

You have learned how to turn on the computer. Now it's time to "point" at things. The small arrow you see on the computer screen is called the Cursor. We use the Mouse to move this arrow.

Using the mouse correctly is very important in office work. If you don't have control over the mouse, your work will slow down.

1. The Correct Way to Hold a Mouse

Many people grip the mouse too tightly, which causes the arrow (cursor) to fly all over the screen.

Holding Style: Always keep the mouse on a flat surface (Mouse Pad). Rest your palm on the back part of the mouse.
Finger Placement: Place your First Finger (Index Finger) on the Left Button and your Middle Finger on the Right Button.

2. The Game of Clicking (Left vs Right Click)

A mouse has 2 main buttons, and they both do different things.

Left Click (Once): Press this only once. It is used to choose (select) any icon, file, or button.
Double Left Click (Twice quickly): When you want to open a folder or file, click the left button twice without stopping.
Right Click (Once): This is like a "Secret Menu." It opens options. For example, if you want to change a file's name (Rename) or Delete it, you will Right Click.

3. Scroll Wheel (The Middle Wheel)

There is a small wheel between the two buttons.

Spin it up or down with your first finger. This is useful when: you are browsing the internet, looking at a large Excel file, or need to go up and down on a long page.

4. Drag and Drop (Pick and Place)

This is very useful for managing files in an office.

How to do it: Left Click on a file and keep it pressed (don't let go).
Now move the mouse to take the file to another location.
Now release the button. The file will be "Dropped" there.

5. Hover (Moving the mouse without clicking)

Sometimes you just need to take the mouse arrow over a button or icon without clicking. This is called Hovering. For example, moving the arrow over a button on the internet might change its color or show a small information box.

Essential Glossary (Words to Remember)

  • Cursor: The arrow seen on the screen.
  • Pointer: Another name for the Cursor.
  • Clicking: Pressing the mouse button.

Today's Practice (The Blue Box Trick)

Let's practice a little so your hand gets set on the mouse.

Go to your computer's Desktop (main screen). Press and hold the Left button of the mouse. Drag the mouse diagonally downwards. You will see a Blue Box forming on the screen. Doing this repeatedly will strengthen your control over the mouse.
Tip: If the arrow disappears from the screen, don't worry. Just move the mouse in circles, and it will appear immediately.

Using Mouse (Touchpad) on a Laptop

Moving the Arrow (Cursor): Place one finger on the touchpad and move it lightly.
Left Click: Press the bottom-left part of the touchpad, or simply tap once anywhere on the touchpad.
Right Click: Press the bottom-right corner of the touchpad. This will open the options menu.
Scrolling: Place Two Fingers on the touchpad together and slide them up or down.
