Lesson 03: Start Typing with the Keyboard

You have learned how to turn on the computer and hold the mouse; now it's time to tell the computer what you want to say. For this, we use the Keyboard.

Whether you need to write an email or fill in names in Excel at the office, the keyboard is your best friend.

1. Desktop vs Laptop Keyboard: What's the Difference?

Desktop Keyboard: It is usually larger with plenty of space between buttons. It features a separate Number Pad on the right side.
Laptop Keyboard: It is smaller and more compact with flat buttons. The Power Button is often located in the corner of the keyboard itself.

2. Cursor: Where will typing begin?

On the screen, you will see a small vertical line | blinking. This is called the Cursor. Remember, whatever button you press will always be typed where this blinking line is positioned.

3. The "Big 4" Buttons of Typing (Essential)

Button What does it do?
Spacebar The longest button on the keyboard. Used to leave a gap (space) between two words.
Enter Used to start a new line or paragraph. It is also used to click "OK" on prompts.
Backspace If you type something wrong, use this to erase it from the back.
Caps Lock If this light is ON, everything you type will be in CAPITAL letters (ABCD).

4. The Magic of the Shift Key (Secret Trick)

The Shift button appears in two places on the keyboard. It has two very useful functions:

Capitalize a Single Letter: If Caps Lock is off, hold Shift while pressing any letter to type it in Capital. (Example: Shift + e = E).
Upper Symbols: Some buttons have two things printed on them (like @ above number 2). To type @, you must hold Shift and press 2.

Essential Glossary

  • Keys: Keyboard buttons are called 'Keys'.
  • Layout: The way buttons are arranged on the keyboard.
  • QWERTY: The standard keyboard layout named after the first six letters on the top row.
