Function Keys (F1–F12) and Laptop Fn Key : Lesson 04 — ComputerSeekhoAurJobPao

Lesson 04: Function Keys (F1–F12) and Laptop Fn Key

In the previous part, we learned typing basics. Now, let's talk about the top row of your keyboard, where keys from F1 to F12 are located. These are called Function Keys.

But there is a twist! These buttons behave differently on Laptops compared to Desktops.

1. Desktop Keyboard: Simple and Direct

Desktop keyboards usually don't have an Fn button. This makes things very simple.

F1: Used to open the Help window.
F2 (Most Useful): Click on a file and press F2; you can immediately change its name (Rename). This is used every few minutes in office work.
F5: To Refresh the computer. If the screen hangs or feels slow, press F5.

2. Laptop Keyboard: The "Fn" Key Puzzle

Laptops are compact, so companies assign two tasks to a single button. You will find a button labeled Fn in the bottom left corner.

2.1 Understanding the Modes

Laptop F1–F12 keys have small icons on them, like Volume Up (🔊) or Brightness (☀️).

Setting 1: Direct Mode
If pressing F1 immediately mutes the sound, it means the icons are working directly. To get Help, you must press Fn + F1.
Setting 2: Function Mode
If pressing F1 opens the Help window, Function Mode is active. To use icons like volume, you must press Fn + F key.

3. F-Keys Office Shortcuts (Highly Useful)

F11: To make the screen Full Screen while reading on the internet. Press it again to return to normal.
F12: Used in Microsoft Word or Excel to save a file with a new name (Save As).

4. Laptop Multimedia Control

  • Brightness: Increase or decrease screen light (☀️+ / ☀️-)
  • Volume: Control the speaker sound (🔊)
  • Touchpad Lock: Some laptops have a button to disable the touchpad. If your mouse stops working suddenly, check if this was pressed by mistake.

Function Keys (F1–F12) and Common Tasks

F1Opens Help window
F2Renames a file
F3Opens Search
F5Refreshes the screen
F7Spelling check in Word
F11Full screen mode

💡 Simple Tip: If you are new to an office, check on your first day whether your laptop requires the Fn key for shortcuts or works directly.

Essential Glossary

  • Function Keys: The top row of the keyboard (F1–F12).
  • Rename: Changing a file's name (F2 shortcut).
  • Alt + F4: A shortcut to immediately close any open program or window.

Today's Practice

Select any photo or file on your computer and press F2. See if you can rename it. If not, try pressing Fn + F2. This will help you understand how your keyboard is configured.
