Lesson 17: Internet and Browser (The Gateway to the World)
What Will You Learn?
Until now, you have learned the internal workings of the computer: typing, creating files, making PDFs, and saving files in a Pen Drive. Now, we will learn the basic use of the Internet.
With the help of the Internet, you can find information, read the news, look at maps, download forms, and search for information needed for office work.
1. How to Check Internet Connection
Before using the internet, we must check if the computer is connected or not. Small icons are located in the bottom right corner of the screen. You might find two types of icons there:
🌐 Globe or Red Cross Icon: If you see a globe or a red cross, it means the internet is not connected. In this case, you will need to connect to Wi-Fi or check the office internet cable.
2. What is a Browser? (Window to the Internet)
A special software called a Browser is used to run the internet. With the help of a browser, we open websites, search for things, and read information.
Most common browsers: Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox. Google Chrome is the most used in offices and homes.
3. How to Open a Browser
2. Double Click on it using the mouse.
3. Chrome will now open. A new window will appear on the screen with a long white line at the top. This is called the Address Bar.
4. What is an Address Bar?
The address bar is the most important part of the browser. It is the long line at the top of the browser. It is used for two things:
- To open a website: If you know the name of the website, you can type it here. (Example:
www.google.com) Then press Enter. - To search: If you don't know the website name, just type your question. (Example:
Leave application format) Then press Enter. Google will show you many results.
5. Clicking on a Link
When Google shows results, you will see lines in blue color. These are called Links. Clicking on a link with the mouse opens a new page where you can read the full information.
6. Tabs: Multiple Websites at Once
Sometimes you are reading one website and want to look at another one too. For this, there is a + (Plus) sign at the top of the browser. Clicking it opens a New Tab. This way, the first page does not close and you can view another website as well.
7. Back and Refresh Buttons
- Back Button (←): If you accidentally go to the wrong page, you can go back to the previous page by pressing the Back arrow.
- Refresh Button (↻): If a page is not loading correctly, press the Refresh button. The page will load again.
Internet Safety Rules (Very Important)
2. Check the Lock Icon: If a lock icon (🔒) is visible next to the website name, the website is secure.
3. Beware of Pop-ups: If a message suddenly appears saying: "You won a prize", do not click on it. Directly press X to close the page.
4. Do Not Share Personal Information: Never write your phone number, password, or OTP on an unknown website.
