Cell, Row, and Column (The True Identity of Excel) : Lesson 28 — ComputerSeekhoAurJobPao
Lesson 28: Cell, Row and Column (The Real Identity of Excel)
What You Will Learn
When you look at the Excel screen, you will see many small boxes. These boxes are the most important part of Excel. The entire world of Excel rests on just 3 things: Column, Row and Cell. Once you understand these three, half of Excel's concept becomes clear.
1. Column (Vertical Line)
The lines on the screen that run from top to bottom are called Columns.
How to identify: A Column is always named with a Letter: A, B, C, D, E…
2. Row (Horizontal Line)
The lines on the screen that run from Left to Right are called Rows.
How to identify: A Row is always named with a Number: 1, 2, 3, 4…
- • Row 1 → the topmost line
- • Row 2 → the line just below it
3. Cell (Small Box)
The small box that is formed where a Column and a Row meet is called a Cell.
Everything you type in Excel — a name, number, date, or calculation — is always written inside a Cell.
4. How is a Cell Address Formed?
Every Cell in Excel has its own address. This address is made up of 2 things:
• Column A + Row 1 = A1
• Column B + Row 5 = B5
What this means:
- • A1 → the cell where Column A and Row 1 meet
- • B5 → the cell where Column B and Row 5 meet
Excel uses this address to know exactly where your data has been entered.
Office Glossary (Words to Remember)
• Horizontal: Line running left to right → Row
• Intersection: Where a Row and Column meet → Cell
1. Open Excel and select Blank Workbook
2. Click on any cell with your mouse
3. Identify which Column (A, B, C…) and which Row (1, 2, 3…) it belongs to
4. Combine both to say the cell's name — for example C4, D2, B7
5. Check the Name Box — is the same address shown there?
6. Now click on 5 different cells and check each one's address
What You Learned in This Lesson:
- What a Column is — a vertical line running top to bottom, identified by letters
- What a Row is — a horizontal line running left to right, identified by numbers
- What a Cell is — the small box formed where a Column and Row meet
- How a Cell address is formed — Column letter + Row number
- The meaning of Vertical, Horizontal and Intersection
